is an architect and an urban planner holding Master’s Degrees from Harvard University in Architecture and MIT in City and Regional Planning. His practice is wide ranging and includes private residences, multiple dwelling communities as well as the design of retail and commercial office spaces.
Born in Greece, he came to the United States to study Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and remained there and apprenticed to Mies van der Rohe, one of the 20th centuries’ most brilliant architects, whose influence can be seen in the simplicity, utility and elegance of Constantine’s work.
After leaving Mies’ office, he went to Boston to study at Harvard and later, MIT. His work there focused on the relationship of the built environment and human behavior, still an important area of interest to him and one for which he gained recognition in the field through his writing and as an arbiter, whose expertise was highly valued in ethical and legal matters.
Constantine began his architectural practice in Cambridge, Massachusetts, continuing his work, lecturing nationally and internationally, and conducting research on the intricacies of human interaction within private and public spaces. He also served as a US Government consultant as well as design architect through the National Institute of Mental Health for several prototypical public service facilities across the nation. It was during this phase of his career that he also began teaching, first as a Professor of Architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design, and later, relocating to New York as Dean of the School of Architecture at Pratt Institute, where he remains today as a guest critic.
In the late 80’s the focus of his practice changed to the planning and design of large scale residential communities utilizing all of his educational background and professional experience to date and including every detail from site planning to interior design.
Today, Constantine maintains his practice, in both commercial and residential design, in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, an environment of great innovation and industrial creativity. This new and inspiring vision of the future combined with the time he spends at his home on Fire Island, NY, have strengthened his lifelong commitment to refined design, economy and the harmonious and sustainable adaptation of evolving technologies and environmental conditions. A hallmark of his practice is the dedication and advocacy he provides his clients, many of whom go on to become his friends.
